Study N°11
Study
For its eleventh issue, the editorial team turned its focus to the often mythologized spaces where art is born: the artist’s studio.
Photographer Jeff Henrikson spent the spring crisscrossing New York City to document the studios of eleven contemporary artists: Joe Bradley, John Chamberlain, Francesco Clemente, Joan Jonas, Maggie Lee, Nate Lowman, Nick Mauss, Win McCarthy, R.H. Quaytman, Jessi Reaves, and Olivia Vigo. These are elusive spaces where thought takes form and concept becomes creation.
What he discovered was as diverse as the city itself. These studios grow and shift alongside the artist’s career. Some are minimal, others expansive and commanding—but all bear the unmistakable imprint of their inhabitants. More than mere workspaces, they are extensions of the artists’ minds: places where instinct meets intention, and where the creative process begins.
The mythology surrounding the artist’s studio is longstanding. It’s a subject that has been photographed endlessly throughout art history. These places of creation continue to draw us in—voyeurs searching for the source of inspiration. But Henrikson offers something more inquisitive, more nuanced. His is a study stripped of romance, favoring clarity over idealization.
Legendary artist Joan Jonas appears on the cover, embodying the quiet strength and radical clarity that have defined her decades-long practice. Her presence sets the tone for a collection of stories that venture beyond the finished work and into the intimate, often chaotic spaces where ideas take shape.
In this issue dedicated to artists and the spaces they craft, the editorial team also turned its fashion lens to another charged environment: the gallery. Photographer Marie Deteneuille, in collaboration with stylist Rae Boxer, created a visual narrative inspired by the commanding aura of the gallerist—brought to life by model Saskia de Brauw. Both subject and object, she moves through the space not only as a purveyor of art but as an embodiment of it. The result is a portrait of a woman who exists within the architecture of the gallery but transcends it—at once dealer, curator, muse, and masterpiece.
