SP6 A MANUAL FOR LIVING CURATED FOR NIKE / PRE-ORDER: DELIVERY FROM MAY 13
A Magazine Curated By and Nike, Inc. are pleased to present A Manual For Living Curated for Nike, a special project exploring the internal intelligence of the global sportswear brand known for its relentless innovation in service of athletes. The publication functions as a manual, intended as a tool to deepen understanding not only of the human psyche, but also the way in which it connects with others and engages with the world.
Spanning nearly 200 pages, the editorial object is organised into five sections: Mind, Body, Soul, Desire and Imagination. Each section features exercises and challenges meant to be annotated and actioned, informed by the hybrid of sport science, athlete* mindset and creative practice. Contributions come from voices at the centre of Nike’s world alongside artists and practitioners beyond it.
Mind opens with an essay by Nicholas Schonberger on the language of style, examining how culture and sportswear continuously redefine one another. A collaborative design challenge led by Martin Lotti and Golnaz Armin offers insight into Nike’s internal creative dynamics. The section also includes a colour-based personality quiz, reflections from artists such as Maia Ruth Lee, David Benjamin Sherry and Jason Baerg, and perceptual exercises developed with Matt Nurse and neuroscientist Poppy Crum.
Body presents a exploration of pre-competition rituals by photographer Zeng Wu and stylist Audrey Hu. Chefs Fredrik Berselius, Jason Liu, and Sohla El-Waylly develop athlete-focused recipes, while a photo essay by Zora Sicher captures the intimacy of touch in sport.
Soul unfolds with an essay by John Hoke III considering time and sport’s philosophical dimensions, while architect Jayden Ali convenes a discussion on stadiums as modern ritual spaces. Works by Lita Albuquerque guide readers through themes of higher consciousness.
Desire features experimental furniture by Carrie McKnelly and documented by Logan Jackson, alongside conversations between Lotti and Hans Ulrich Obrist. Project Goddess reimagines beauty in sport through a striking photoseries by makeup artist Marie Guillon and photographer Kapfhammer.
Imagination closes the publication with Ashton Eaton and Tobie Hatfield discussing design and performance, while an athlete workshop reimagines the future of sport. A final comic by Geoff Manaugh, inspired by Eric King, offers an optimistic vision of innovation and possibility.
