Having been initiated by Walter Van Beirendock, A Magazine Curated By could be considered the most intimate publication any designer has a chance to create — it is by a designer for their community of lovers of culture, namely fashion. Starting in 2000 initially as N°A, B, C, D and E Magazines before relaunching in 2004 under our current title, A Magazine Curated By, this publication has been a vessel for designers’ visions. Through our pages, we help designers amplify their voices, guiding their creative narratives.
Rather than looking to the past archives, we’ve envisioned this special edition with the frame of ‘a magazine’ and what that word means, as a gathering of ideas and images but with a contemporary lens, something that at once feels timeless but timely. Our curator-designers have approached their pages how they would a fashion collection, through their eyes and perspectives. Some have looked at their own issue for inspiration, like Martin Margiela, Delfina Delettrez and Martine Sitbon, responding to their previous work now. Some have chosen to commission photographers to make stories to expand on narratives they have in their own issues like Yohji Yamamoto, Erdem Moralioglu, Glenn Martens, Olivier Theyskens, Peter Do, Kris Van Assche. Many, since making their issue, have expanded their artistic practise from pure fashion to look at other forms of creation, like the artmaking of Jun Takahashi and Hussein Chalayan, Francesco Risso who choose to show their artwork and creative expression in this issue. Others have chosen to make new artwork like Lucie and Luke Meier and Proenza Schouler, or chosen to use these pages as diaristic worlds like Haider Ackermann, Bernhard Willhelm, Giambattista Valli and Pierpaolo Piccioli. The designers have also been asked to reinterpret the iconic ‘A’ or the letter of their issue.
